The Humane Association urges everyone not to give pets as gifts.
Owning a pet is a big responsibility and commitment and potential pet owners need to take time and care in selecting a pet that will fit the potential owners lifestyle. Pets given as gifts are often purchased on impulse and the result is usually an unhappy pet owner or another animal brought back to the Shelter because the new owner couldn’t care for it. Also with all the excitement involved with the holidays or special occasions a new pet does not adjust well.
If you would like to surprise someone with a pet as a gift, please consider wrapping up a leash, collar or food bowl or purchasing a gift certificate from the Shelter. Then after things have quieted down, the prospective new owner can come to the Shelter and spend quality time choosing their new four-legged companion.
