Alternatives to Surrendering

Consider the following options before deciding to surrender your pet or stray:

1. Have you looked into resources to help keep your beloved pet or are you interested in adopting the stray you found in your home?

Do you need assistance with the following:

2. Have you considered keeping your pet, or fostering the stray you found, while trying to rehome it on your own?

3. Have you contacted organizations that are foster-based, like rescues, or that house pets and strays in a home environment instead of a kennel?

Pet Surrender Instructions

Note: By appointment ONLY.

What is the purpose of a managed intake?

  • To ensure the best possible care and quality of life
  • To avoid overcrowding
  • To reduce illness, stress, and length of stay
  • To save space for the pets and strays who need it the most

The intake process takes time.

Please allow 20-30 minutes for this to be completed.

You can surrender a dog or cat to the Humane Association of Warren County, anytime, Monday-Saturday from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM. We are closed on Sundays.

Bring your driver’s license or state ID. We CANNOT process the intake without identification.

We DO NOT accept dogs or cats from other organizations. We will have you return the pet to the organization it originally came from.

We do require fees when surrendering a pet. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization that is NOT supported by tax dollars. The only financial support we receive is through donations and our adoption fees.

Please bring only yourself and the pet. Children, other family members, and friends are not permitted during the intake appointment. Too many people can cause more stress on pets.

What To Bring To Your Appointment

  • All medical records and vetting history. This will expedite the pet’s and stray’s placement into a home and shortens the length of stay in the shelter.
  • A completed pet profile from our website. This will aid us to ensure the most appropriate placement in a home.
  • The pet’s blanket/bed harbors their scent. This helps them to transition into a foreign environment.
  • A driver’s license/ID

Please bring only yourself and the pet/stray. Children, other family members, and friends are not permitted during the intake appointment. Too many people can cause more stress on the pets.
